Improve Energy Management & Load Shedding

Challenge: When a power and utility operation within an industrial plant runs multiple steam producing units, turbines, compressors and/or chillers, the goal is to allocate load across these units in the most economical way. This is made difficult by constant demand changes and the problem of calculating each unit’s efficiency in real-time. For human personnel operating manually, it is not typically possible to have load distributed in the most cost effective manner at all times. Also, when normal operation is interrupted by a trip or failure, site personnel often must respond by quickly shedding steam or electrical load. Failure to do this effectively can result in a total plant shutdown or large cost impact.

Solution: If demand is allocated on a cost basis across available utility producing units at all times, significant savings result. Emerson assists industrial utility owners with cost based load allocation (economic dispatch) by implementing control solutions that calculate unit costs in real-time and automatically distribute load within defined constraints. In addition, Emerson SmartProcess™ solutions assist operations personnel with failure events by automatically shedding loads and rebalancing utility systems such that impact on production is minimized to the degree possible.

In Fact: Emerson worked with a refining site in the United Kingdom to implement a real time Energy Management System (EMS).  The project resulted in significant benefit including:

  • Reduced fuel cost and increased site electrical generation
  • Annual energy cost savings >EUR €1MM
  • Significant CO2 emissions reduction
