Steam Traps

Challenge:

As energy costs continue to rise, the cost of steam produced by site utility operations is increasing and steam waste is becoming an even larger issue.   Lack of proper steam trap maintenance is common on industrial sites, primarily due to the fact that manual surveys are so time consuming that they are impractical.  With limited maintenance programs in place and the time delay between a steam trap failure and when the problem is found, 5-10% of total energy costs are typically lost through steam trap leaks.  In steam systems that have not been maintained for 3 to 5 years, as many as 15% - 30% of installed steam traps may have failed.  Monitoring of steam system devices is required for optimal efficiency; the challenge is how to accomplish this cost effectively, reliably, and without disrupting operations.

Solution:

The technology to cost effectively monitor all steam traps at all times is now available.  Emerson is helping industrial sites significantly reduce their energy costs with real-time automated steam trap monitoring that is easy to install and maintain.  Wireless Acoustic Transmitters are used to monitor steam traps even in remote and hard to reach locations.  These devices do not require annual inspection and they clamp on, so installation requires no pipe cutting or downtime.  The state of each steam trap, and its monitoring device, is communicated wirelessly to a central database where maintenance personnel can effectively plan and prioritize their work.  Up-to-the minute visibility of all steam traps allows manual rounds to be eliminated and energy waste to be cut dramatically.  Savings for a typical site are 5% or more of the energy cost for steam production.

Remote Monitoring Service:

The Steam Trap Health Monitoring Service is a subscription service with no upfront cost to you. Our team takes care of everything: set up, installation, and continuous monitoring. Positive cash-flow can be generated as soon as your first leaking trap is identified and replaced. And the best part? The entire process is completely hands-off for your entire staff. This way, you can make decisions in real time, and see instant results.
