About Shafer

Known as dependable, fast-acting, and rugged, Shafer™ products include pneumatic and hydraulic rotary vane actuators, rotary piston actuators, linear valve actuators, and line break controls.

Since the expansion of the pipeline industry after World War II, Shafer has engineered systems and actuators that enabled the automatic control and protection of vital equipment and assured human safety. Now under the umbrella of Emerson Electric Co., Shafer products continued to be manufactured in Mansfield, Ohio, USA. The facility earned the ISO 9001 certification in March 1993.

You will find Shafer products around the world where customers rely on them in industries such as oil and natural gas pipelines (including offshore and subsea pipelines) and processing facilities, water pumping stations, and mining slurry operations. Shafer’s principal product is a valve actuator, which is mounted on the stem of a pipeline valve and permits the valve to be opened or closed automatically by either an internal self-generated signal or a remote, hydraulic, electric or pneumatic signal.

Research and development represents our investment in the future. Many of our new products and the refinement of existing products are based upon concepts generated by our customers. Listening to customer concerns, and responding with engineered product solutions means Shafer's development and improvement objectives are always "market-driven." Because product quality and reliability begin at the drawing board, Shafer  products are continuously evaluated to ensure that the most current technology and materials are applied, using the latest computer aided tools.

Market Served

Shafer™'s principal product is a valve actuator, which is mounted on the stem of a pipeline valve. Valve actuators are devices which permit the valve to be opened or closed automatically by either an internal self-generated signal or a remote, hydraulic, electric or pneumatic signal. Valve actuators are used on the piping of compressors, metering and regulating stations, distribution systems or transmission lines, refineries and petrochemical, gasoline and power plants and for certain marine applications.

Shafer™ valve actuators are used primarily in the gas transmission pipeline industry, where reliability is critical. Hence, Shafer™ has become recognized as "guardians of the world's pipelines." We have valve actuators in service in Siberia, the Andes Mountains, the floor of the ocean off the coast of Spain, and on long lines like the TransCanada pipeline. All of the valves on this 2,000-mile length of pipeline could be operated from a single location!
