Controlling Your Process
PlantWeb digital architecture provides  tight efficient control

Providing better process performance and new levels of flexibility, scalability, and affordability through location-independent control.

The power of predictive intelligence

Process and equipment information from intelligent digital devices not only enables you to predict and remedy conditions that could otherwise lead to unexpected downtime. It also helps reduce process variability by keeping those devices and instruments performing at their best -- which, in turn, enables you to reduce costs, improve quality, and increase throughput by running closer to optimum.

Never control off bad data

In the analog world, any signal that is between 4 and 20 ma is assumed good, when in reality a large number of problems could exist. The design of the PlantWeb architecture inherently provides the information to detect abnormal control or I/O processing conditions with its predictive intelligence so you never control off bad data

Control loops are automatically monitored on a continuous basis and any degradation in loop performance, variability or detection of an abnormal condition in a measurement, actuator, or control block is automatically flagged-- without additional configuration.

You'll also have the confidence that inputs to advanced controls and optimization applications are based on valid information about the process and the equipment running it.

Control where it makes sense

With PlantWeb's FOUNDATION fieldbus capabilities, you can also take advantage of location-independent control. A function block for PID control can run wherever it makes sense--whether it's in the control system, the transmitter, the valve, or some other device. And because all Emerson Process Management fieldbus devices use a common set of function blocks, your control strategy operates the same way no matter where you choose to locate those control functions.

The result is extraordinary flexibility, as well as more-affordable scalability than in traditional DCS-centered architectures. You can start as small as one or two loops--at a reasonable cost--and then scale up to any size in affordable increments as your needs change or your budget allows. And adding more loops or functionality later is just as easy.

Systems that make the most of the architecture

Emerson's leadership in field devices as well as digital architecture has resulted in automation systems that make the most of PlantWeb's predictive intelligence. DeltaV™ provides unmatched control power, flexibility, and ease of use for batch, continuous, and hybrid processes, and Ovation® reflects over four decades of experience in meeting the needs of the power-generation and water- and wastewater-treatment industries.
